In this issue, we describe how Joanne Lara has enthusiastically worked her tail off as the co-owner of Autism Works Now! — a vocational program for adults on the autism spectrum. She incorporated everything from résumé writing to interviewing, which are common in these kinds of endeavors. Lara also wrote a book about how to train those on the autism spectrum to get jobs. It’s been a Herculean job, to say the least — but, sadly, she learned firsthand that most industries still have not open their doors to the almost 50,000 18-year-old autism graduates annually, most of whom are hoping to work and, one day, live independently.
