Juan Alexander Chavez expresses himself though painting. The article on p. 20 not only illustrates his ability to paint but also highlights how someone on the autism spectrum who barely speaks can communicate. He has a team – his mother and father, a speech therapist, and his art teacher – who have supported him enthusiastically, particularly when they realized his painting gives him joy and serenity.
